Snow A Retelling of "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs" Once upon a Time Tracy Lynn Mahlon F Craft Books

I see there are quite the mixed reviews for "Snow", but I have to say that I just adored it. The basic premise of the fairy tale Snow White is the same as we have come to know and love...evil stepmother, magic mirror, hunter coming after her heart, and a band of lovable comrades to take her in. But in this story, the evil stepmother wants Snow's heart for a magic experiment to try to get pregnant...she is jelous of Snow's fair beauty and believes there is no point in a woman's life if she isn't a mother or a young beauty. Warned by the fiddler playing assistant to the evil stepmother, Rose runs away. There things do start varying from the old fashioned tale a little more. She meets up with a group of street thiefs, living in the dark in a hideout. They can't work more honest, day jobs because they all have something different about them. They are part human, part other. They have different other sides..cat, mouse, rat, raven, sparrow.. but they take Snow in and fall in love with her. In return she cooks meals and keeps house. Then one day the stepmother finds her with the help of the mirror and she tries to get Snow to believe she has changed. Innocent as always, Snow belives her and I won't say any more about the plot because it has some different twists and turns you must read. Some reviewers don't like how the story varies from the more traditional tellings but I have to ask: What is the point in reading the same thing over and again? This is still a fairy tale and has its roots deeply in the Snow White tale but the author, Tracy Lynn adds some exciting fantasy elements that are magical in their own right. This is a great retelling and I am glad to have the chance to read it.

Snow A Retelling of "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs" Once upon a Time Tracy Lynn Mahlon F Craft Books Reviews

I love this story but I hate it when the cover arrives damaged. Yes, when the cover arrives with a bent corner that I did not cause it is damaged to me.
A very different retelling of a classic story.
One of my favorite books.

I read my original copy so much it started to fall apart. I bought another hard copy and the kindle version.

it is a very good retelling of snow white with a mix of Victorian/steampunk/modern era-ness to it.
If you like stories with a twist, this book is for you. I have read almost the entire Once Upon A Time series, and this book is by far one of the best. The only down side is that there is s B-word towards the last half of the book (I used a Sharpie and marked it out), so parents might want to mark it out as well. This book has a permanent spot on my bookshelf!
This book updates the fairy tale of "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs" to Victorian England and replaces most (but not quite all) of the magic with what's basically steampunk sf. Unfortunately it trips itself up in several places, and that kept bringing me up with a jerk, which is not the way to maintain one's suspension of disbelief. Jessica Abigail Danvers Kenigh is the daughter of a Welsh duke; her mother died bearing her, a circumstance for which her father blames her, and her first 11 years are consequently spent mostly among the servants and their children. When her father, still longing for a male heir, takes a second wife, Jessica is suddenly expected to start acting like a young lady, studying with a tutor, and so on. This she could adjust to, but her stepmother is her father's age and, though she longs to give him his desired son, she can't do it on her own. That means resorting to secret scientific methods, which in turn lead her to placing what amounts to a tongue-tying spell on the young Scots fiddler, Alan McDonald, who comes to the estate in search of a patron. Eventually it also leads her to the belief that dining on her stepdaughter's heart will give her the youth and vitality to bear a child. Warned by Alan, Jessica runs away to London, where she falls in with the self-named Lonely Ones, five young people with aspects of both human and animal, who live a secret shadow-life and support themselves by thievery and pickpocketing. Yet they accept her as part of their family and she grows to love them. Then her stepmother appears in London, claiming to be repentant and in search of her forgiveness.

Jessica--who adopts the alias of "Snow" at the time of her flight--is a well-drawn character, interesting and sympathetic. But as I've already mentioned, the insertion of spells--and they *are* spells--in a steampunk universe is distracting and puzzling, which spoiled a lot of the pleasure of the story for me. What's more, the author makes several errors in her setting that alert proofreaders should have caught dukes are nobility, not royalty (unless they're princes who've also been created the Duke of So-and-So); bell-shaped skirts and bustles weren't in style simultaneously; troikas weren't used in the British Isles, and guilds were no longer in fashion in the Victorian Era. And she's not consistent about her dating at one point she says Jessica has been with the Lonely Ones for six months, at another time "nearly a year." The ending is also rather vague and somehow unsatisfying (at least to me). Maybe it's just this author and I'll have better luck with one of the other books in this series, but this one was a disappointment.
As advertised! Fast delivery.
When I first read this, I was about eleven or twelve. I always remembered being very impressed with the story, so I decided to read it again. I really enjoyed rediscovering the story and characters. This is a very unique retelling of Snow White. The pacing of the story, the writing, and the character development really won me over both times reading it. One of the parts that really stands out to me is the romance that develops between Snow and her "prince". I would most certainly read this book again in the future. I won't spend a lot of time going over the plot, since other reviewers have already done so, but I will say that if you love creative interpretations of fairy tales, this is most certainly the book for you. Perfect for all ages!
