Kathleen has been busy, working on a fundraiser for the Reading Buddies program, getting a wedding set up between Maggie and Emmett, and her own relationship with her hunky Marcus. But when the ex wife of the town troublemaker shows up and then dies due to an allergic reaction - she fears for the worst. Now she is being drawn into another mystery, and this one may be her toughest yet.

Only one word, AMAZING!!!!!! Normally a series like this would start to feel stale, but Sofie keeps the magic and the entertainment flowing. Poor Kathleen, not only is she getting involved again, but this time Herc and Owen are not helping as they seem to be having a bro fight and she is working to get them to make up - which of course just adds to their adorable characters. Also the romance is really spreading as several of her friends seem to be matching up with someone (and a few of them I am happy to see). Again this was another great book and I can not wait until the next one to see what happens to everyone - and maybe watch Marcus have a nervous breakdown whenever he finds out about our favorite furry sleuths.

In the sixth Magical Cats mystery, it’s early December in Mayville Heights, Minnesota, and librarian Kathleen Paulson finds life good. She’s decided to settle in permanently as head of the local library; she and her sometimes guyfriend, Detective Marcus Gordon, have finally come to an understanding about Kathleen’s tendency to get involved in Marcus’s cases; and Rebecca Nixon, one of Kathleen’s best friends, is going to marry her childhood sweetheart, Everett Henderson, after nearly 50 years of yearning. Then, at a fund-raiser for one of the library’s juvenile programs, an unexpected guest—Dayna Chapman, who happens to be the ex-wife of Burtis Chapman, another of Kathleen’s friends, and the long-estranged mother of his sons—dies of an allergic reaction after eating a cupcake. Why she even came back to Mayville Heights is a mystery to everyone, including her ex, and how pistachio nuts (the trigger for her reaction) happened to get into her cupcake when baker Olivia Ramsey is herself allergic to cashews, is another. But the police lab discovers that all the chocolate cupcakes in the box from which Dayna took her treat were coated with pistachio oil—which suggests that somebody intended to kill her. When Burtis’s son Brady is suspected of being that somebody, Kathleen and her two mysterious cats, Hercules (who can walk through walls) and Owen (who can make himself invisible at will), get involved in the investigation. As Kathleen notes, both cats “somehow knew what was a clue and what wasn’t,” and they guide her past assorted red herrings until she discovers that the murder actually ties in to a long-ago robbery. Like Kathleen herself, you’ll probably be surprised at the killer’s identity. A sound, enjoyable entry into an interesting small-town cozy series.
I've been reading a lot of Heavy Stuff for a while, and decided to reward myself with a cozy mystery novel that was unrepentantly "Just tell me a story!" I knew that the earlier books in Sofie Kelly's "Magical Cats" series had always made me smile (starting with Curiosity Thrilled the Cat), so I was confident this latest adventure would do the same.

Yup.

In this book -- I think it's the sixth? in any case, you should start at the beginning -- librarian Kathleen Paulson is bound and determined NOT to get wrapped up in yet another mysterious death, even if it DID happen at the fundraiser she organized. She doesn't want to mess up her still-new relationship with the detective in her life. But still, she _does_ know the people who are the Obvious Suspects, and she's motivated to help.

There are several elements in this Magical Cats series that keep me coming back. One of them is a knowledgable librarian (though there's not much in this novel about bookish interests); another is the cats' adorableness and their unique abilities (here, Sofie Kelly delivers well); there's also the whodunnitness (and this one's okay); yet another element is the cast of characters and their story arcs. Much of the attention is given to character development this time around, and that's just fine with me. All the main players have warm and humor (not HA HA HA LOL but things that make you smile with affection), and everybody's working to make their lives a little better.

If you've been reading along with the series and want to know if this latest installment is good, I can happily report YES. If you haven't, but you're looking for good storytelling, a fun puzzle (who DID do it, and why?), and cats who act like cats... well, now you have a whole mess o' books to buy.
