My Review

I have a confession to make. I used to read a lot of NA (New Adult) and romance books. What is NA? Well, based on what i've read that has been classified as NA, it's a book set around the years between 18-late 20's. And all of the books that i've read that have been labeled NA have been romance or had 'adult situations'. I know that currently there are a lot of authors who are focusing on this genre that are aiming to broaden it's reach a little. Instead of just being romance, they're trying to introduce NA with no adult situations and more fantasy/paranormal/sci-fy. Anyway, that got way off track. I used to read a bunch of romance, but I got tired of it. I was seeing the same situations and character styles over and over again. And I was reading a lot of books that just. . .weren't that great. The writing wasn't awesome, and the books goals seemed to be to get to the steamy scenes. So I stopped reading as many of them.

A few months ago, I was reading some blogs and saw several bloggers posting about Jay Crownover. I was intrigued and decided to give one of her books a shot. And that was Rule. I was hooked! I read Rule in one day and I loved what I was reading. Yes it was steamy, but I love some good romance. It was also well-written and her characters were totally engrossing. So when I heard that she had a new series coming out, I decided to pick up Better When He's Bad.

Overall, I don't really love the trend of the bad boy as a romance lead. I think sometimes it's an excuse to write guys who behave horribly and have them come off as attractive. And don't get me wrong, the whole alpha male thing can be hot, but it was getting overplayed for me. I saw it in way too many books. And Better When He's Bad is all about the bad boy, Bax. Initially, I thought I would hate it. Bax is just getting out of a five year prison sentence and the first day he's out, he's already had some fun on the side and gotten in a fight with some of the goons he used to work for. Overall, he's just not that nice of a guy. But there's the catch. Even though he does some criminal things, and I do mean criminal, the main reason I stuck with this book and ended up liking it is that we actually see Bax overcome the bad childhood he had and end up trusting another person.

Dovie is Bax's best friend Race's sister. After Bax gets out of prison, he immediately tries to track Race down, but he's nowhere to be found. In trying to find him, Bax stumbles on his sister, Dovie. He's not exactly blown away by her personality, but he has to admire her drive and stubbornness in trying to help find her brother. The chemistry between Bax and Dovie is hot. We can see where this story is going as soon as they have their first conversation but that doesn't ruin the story at all. I really loved Dovie. She's been handed a really bad lot in life, but she's kept her head up and done her best to make the best of a really bad situation. I think a really realistic part of this book is that Dovie doesn't fix Bax. Although we may want her to fix him, and have him come out the other side a totally different person, it's much more realistic that we see Dovie do her best to show Bax where he's going wrong and have him be the same person on the other side. Just a little bit more open and considerate of his actions.

The thing that kept me from loving this book was Bax honestly. I understood the idea that Jay Crownover was trying to make. Growing up a criminal in a bad part of town does not make you a very nice person. And even though Bax was an attractive guy, I spent 3/4's of the book kind of disliking him. He's an ass, he doesn't talk much and he doesn't make concessions for anyone. I think if we had seen more redeeming qualities in Bax sooner in the book, it would have been a better story for me. The fact was, he was a jerk for most of the book and then at the end we see him kind of coming to terms with the actions that will effect the rest of his life.

Overall though, it was an entertaining story. The chemistry between Bax and Dovie is really hot, and the steamy scenes are . . . .really good. *fans self* I wasn't thrilled with Bax as a character and I definitely prefer Rule, but it was a good read and really well written.

Better When He's Bad is the first book in this new series. The world it takes place in is not black or white, rather it's a gray world where rules and laws are broken for the characters to live life. The main characters in this book are not rich or successful. They are just trying to live their lives day to day. Bax had just been released from prison. He wants to know why he was sent to jail and where his best friend, Race, is. He encounters a woman named Dovie, who just happens to be looking for her brother Race. Dovie and Bax decide to seek the answers they are looking for while moving through their crime ridden world.

I really liked this book and the start to this series. There is just something about a hero who is unapologetic for his criminal lifestyle. He likes his life of crime and rule breaking. He does whatever he wants to survive. Dovie is a sweet girl, born into a rough life after being born through an affair. She doesn't let her rough life bring her down and just wants to find her brother. I love Bax and Dovie together. They are the perfect opposites that are meant for each other. I also loved reading about the supporting characters who will be getting their own books. I loved this world that Jay Crownover has created. It seems so real, like it can happen in any city in the U.S. If you love this author's work then you will love this new series.
Disclaimer I am a Jay Crownover fan. I fell in love with her MCs with the Marked Men series and continue my love in this world with the Saints of Denver. With that said, there is a forward in this book from Jay warning us fans that this is a little different for her. It's grittier and darker than her Marked series. This difference was obvious, and I thought it would be put me off, but as the story played on, I actually grew to care about Bax. Crownover did a fantastic job creating Bax. He was a very complex MC, and I thought Jay built a solid case for why he was the way he was, but also revealed his softer side.

One of the ways these two sides of Bax were illustrated were quite explicitly. Dovie would often switch between "Bax" and "Shane" in addressing his two distinct personas. I have to give a lot of credit to an author, who can take an unapologetic criminal and craft him into a character I care about. In fact, the

This book is a lot like Bax Sexy, Dark, Dangerous. Sexy - the chemistry between Dovie and Bax is off the charts and there is a lot of sexy times between them. Dark - we are taken into the Point, which is an underbelly sort of place. Criminal behavior is the norm and death may be the only way out once you're in. Dangerous - see aforementioned criminal activity, but also dangerous in who you choose to attach yourself with. Attachments could be deadly for you and for those you care about. There were also some plot twists that I did not see coming. I think I audibly gasped when I learned a certain piece of information.

Overall A thrilling gritty walk on the wrong side of town, and a great start to a new series I am excited about.
I loved loved loved this book. It totally lives up to its title. Bax is definitely better when he's bad. I am so glad Jay Crownover did not try to turn Bax into a good guy in the end who does everything above the line, because it would not have worked. I loved Dovie. She was raised in the middle of hell but did not let it take anything from her. She continued to do what was right and do good for others. She never once tried to change Bax, she just reminded him he was worthy and that he mattered, what more could a guy ask for in a woman. There were so many awesome quotes in this book, too many to rewrite. This story had everything that makes a great read... Sex, love, violence, thugs, sex, bad-ass cars, loyalty, friendship, deception, angst, twists, did I mention sex. I absolutely can not wait for Race and Brysen's story.
