I'm a big fan of any history involving Queen Victoria's family, so I've long had an interest in Alix of Hesse and the Romanovs. This book is a solidly researched page turner with an effective twist.

I especially liked the sympathetic treatment of Alix/Empress Alexandra, who is still too often portrayed as shrill, crazy, and domineering in popular culture. This book wove in details about her family and history well, and I liked her conversations/confrontations with her mother-in-law, Marie.

Though all three plot lines flowed well, Veronica's plot held me the most in suspense. It never quite went where I thought it would, and it was quite late in the book when I figured out her connection (and I'm usually good with predicting plot twists). I enjoyed reading details about the modern-day Romanov descendants, whether real or fictional. The Charlotte plot worked well, though it felt like a lot of build up for too brief a pay off.

The weakest point to me was whether a descendant of Nicholas II's daughter would have been considered the heir even in the modern age, given that the Romanov throne was agnatic-cognatic primogeniture (making Vladimir and Paul's male descendants closer to the throne). But it could be argued that at this point, no one would care about male-line primogeniture and would just want a descendant of Nicholas on the throne, if they ever wanted to restore the throne.

Overall, I really enjoyed this book and would recommend it to anyone. I look forward to seeing anything else the author produces.

Just like any novels of the Romanovs.
This book is different than most fiction written about the last Tsar. I found the theory of a fifth daughter very interesting. I would highly recommend it to anyone who loves Russian history and is looking for a light yet entertaining read

I enjoyed this book, but I truly think it would have been better if it stayed on track rather than jumping from Russia to New York. It is an entertaining read, and I think women will enjoy it. Not the best I have read on the Romanov family, but it is fiction, so just enjoy.
Though I am not a devotee of Russian history, I found this novel about the Romanovs very well written and very intriguing. The plot moves quickly and seamlessly back and forth among the three storylines, and just when I think I have the heir figured out, I am surprised at the end. The female characters of Veronica, Lena and Charlotte are strong women I would like to sit down with and enjoy a cup of tea - I guess it would have to be Russian tea!

I highly recommend the book. You will not be disappointed.
The beginning of the story seemed a bit scattered and the male lead wishy washy a times and then very strong in other moments. It seemed there were events missing when the two main characters became so close so soon in modern times.
OK, I don't know historical fiction, let alone anything about the Russian monarchy, from a hole in the wall. I have reached the age where being entertained far exceeds impressing anyone with my reading list. This book definitely entertains. Putting it down in the last 150 pages is something I'll bet few can do. If you are a fan of Sue Grafton, Janet Evanovich, or authors who write engaging stories that don't unnecessarily burden their readers you will like this book. That does not mean you won't be intrigued by the historical aspects. I intend to do some research on the last Tsar and his family simply because of the interest piqued by Ms. Laam's story. In other words what you take away from reading is up to you. You can drill down or simply take the surface. Either way you will feel the time invested is definitely worth it.
