A vivid description of the early years of Charles I and Henrietta Maria's marriage. Henrietta, who was a very young child when her father was assassinated, grew up with her bastard half-brothers and sisters. Her marriage to Charles was made with the intent to ease restrictions on the lives of Roman Catholics living in Great Britain. Of course, neither Charles nor his ministers plan to follow through on this clause of the marriage contract. Hence the need felt, by the court favorite, George Duke of Buckingham, to have a spy-cum-agent provocateur close to the Queen, who will keep him informed of her hopes, fears and plans, while provoking her to act in a manner calculated to turn the British people against her. His choice of Jeffery Hudson, the dwarf son of the local dog trainer, is apparently masterly; Jeffery quickly wins the Queen's confidence. Buckingham's intimate knowledge of Jeffery's family means that he has a hold over the boy. However, Jeffery and the Queen become friends... And when, even after Buckingham's assassination, an even more sinister foe stalks the Queen, Jeffery and his friends step in to save the day.Tags : The Queen's Dwarf: A Novel [Ella March Chase] on Amazon.com. *FREE* shipping on qualifying offers. Beautifully written with great period detail - based on an improbable, but true story. People who are "different" are not really so different, after all ...
An enjoyable read with a very different viewpoint of the time of Charles the 1st. Kind of like a tragedy with a sense of humor. It was interesting to learn about the entertainers and the cost to the lives of the performers meant to serve the queen. Not for everyone, but worth reading.
Time in the 1500's was
Exciting--fun to read the next page! How did the characters keep us drawn into the time period?
This is a well-researched novel which is very good but not great. It will satisfy almost every lover of Tudor-Stuart history. I highly recommend it . The protagonist is a intelligent, sympathetic character. The author understands the beauty and the pain of human relationships.
Ella March Chase never stops in amazing me. She is a fantastic writer and this book just screams amazing.
Ella March Chase has a talent for trapping the reader in her stories and taking you for a great adventure. The Queen's Dwarf is a great read and a different character perspective than what is normally read. I quite enjoyed this book.
I really enjoyed this book in every way. The characters were so well drawn that they seemed real and what most, amazed me was learning that they were nearly all historically actual persons, and not only the actions true, but even more incredible than the book described. There is so much more about Sir Jeffery's
Iife to tell beyond the scope of this book that the author, could easily make another book or two about,Jeffery world changing times In which he lived, including being captured by piRates, being enslaved, involved in regiside, and much more. AND looking life portraits of him and the lovely henrietta Marie at the time, as charming and handsome as described. I will be happily Looking forward to,seeing the rest of Sir Jefferies adventures by this wonderful writer. You can't make up this good a story but you can share it with the world as it deserves to be told.
An enjoyable read but for me made all the more enjoyable by the notes at the back which describe a little about the real life situation that this novel was based on. There really was a queen's dwarf named Jeffrey Hudson and so much of the bones of the story were based on fact. I have rated it as a 4 because I don't think it rates as a literary feast in the way of some novels. The language is engaging but not transporting, the characters are more or less believable but not totally "three dimensional". I did wonder at some of the digressions from the facts - for example the apparently rather ordinary brother of the dwarf in real life was transformed into quite a different character with very different circumstances in the novel (I only know this because the author provided such a lovely summary of the real life circumstances on which she based the novel). However, a novelist has free license I suppose and the brother in the novel made a compelling reason for Jeffrey's terrible and disloyal behaviour to the queen whom he loved so much. Yes - you have to read it, it really is a very different kind of tale.
